Nevada State Parks has initiated a year-long closure of parts of the Spooner Lake Backcountry to replace dam and water pipelines. That affects a large section of the American Discovery Trail between Lake Tahoe and Carson City. This closure not only impacts trails but also many of the nearby roads typically used for detours.

To keep you moving forward, we've published a new 16-mile alternate route, now available in both our Turn-By-Turn directions and on Gaia GPS. The bypass is as efficient as possible, but it does introduce some additional challenges. The route includes campgrounds at Marlette Peak and Hobart Creek Reservoir, so you'll still have access to great overnight options.

⚠️ For westbounders: Be prepared for a steep climb. You'll tackle 3.7 miles on the Creek Trail, with an average grade of 13.7% and an elevation gain of 2,703 ft. It’s tough, but the views are worth every step!

Good news for the Tahoe Rim Trail! The section around Mount Rose Campground has reopened following the containment of the Davis Fire. The Carson Ranger District has lifted closures on both the trail and the campground, along with the reopening of the Mt. Rose Highway. While it’s safe to hike, stay alert for lingering fire-related hazards like unstable terrain or falling trees.

❄️ Sierra Snow Watch

Mount Rose picked up an inch of snow on last Friday, October 18, but there is no indication of when the American Discovery Trail will be closed for the season in the Sierra. The long-standing ADT rule of thumb of 'Clear the Sierra by Halloween' may prove true for another year with only slight chances (30% or less) of snow through next week.
