Indiana South Segment 4
Hiking America member Mike G. passed us info on the closure of an American Discovery Trail section of the Two Lakes Loop trail that passes by Indian Lake and Lake Celina in the Hoosier National Forest.
The logging work occurs in two areas: east and southeast of Indian Lake.
We've got a detour around the closure, adding 5.3mi to the trail until it is reopened. However, for those looking for a nice place to camp, there are many campsites, some with fire rings, alongside beautiful Lake Celina. There are several creeks to ford that you can use to refill water. One modern campsite, South Slope Camping, has flush toilets and electricity. And there's a bit of history to learn. and learn a bit of history.
What's that about history?
The Rickenbaugh House and Post Office is a short 0.36mi W of the trail. The sandstone block house was built in 1874 by Jacob Rickenbaugh. He utilized the same masons who built the stone church in Leopold and the second church of the Abbey at St. Meinrad. The house has been renovated and is open periodically during the summer when staff is available.
